My Kiwi Poet Friend and His New Book of Poems

Verses for the King

Some of you might remember that I traveled to Lithuania in April 2012 for a creative adventure. As a traveling art minister, I was able to connect with some Kiwi friends of mine who are living in Lithuania. Through their connection, I was able to facilitate some collaborative art projects with youth and adults through an orphanage, a school, and some small groups meetings. I originally met them when I lived in Scotland. These days they reach out to a community in Lithuania.

My friend Kelvin is a creative whose art mediums range from poetry, writing, painting, and photography, and I'm sure much more. He has written and published several poetry books over the years. He and his wife have lived in several countries reaching out to various communities. He writes from the heart about the places he's lived and traveled to, and about the people he has encountered along the way. He has had live poetry reading tours around Europe and he has won several awards internationally for his poetry.

He is currently trying to get his most recent book of poetry titled "Verses For The King", published with Vineyard International Publishing and has set up a pledge site to raise funds for this new book. I want to take this moment to introduce you to Kelvin and ask if you'd be willing to at least consider helping out a fellow creative. Thanks! -Lisa

Here is a link to one of Kelvin's sites where he posts his poetry:

INFORMATION ABOUT VERSES FOR THE KING

In Kelvin's own words:

My worship poetry book titled 'Verses for the King' [in faith] will be published by 'Vineyard International Publishing'. They will publish and pay for 50% of the printing. i have to pay for the other 50%.

I am using an excellent New Zealand based crowdfunding website to do this. If all of the money does not come in then those who pledged get refunded. It is a good safe system. Please feel free to visit the site and pledge, but more importantly please pray that God brings this money in.

The following information is taken from the pledge site...

About the Book:

'Verses for the King' is a worship poetry book for anyone who likes to explore or engage with God. Its author, Kelvin Fowler, is a New Zealander who has lived in countries as diverse as the Philippines, Scotland and Mexico. He is currently a Vineyard pastor in Klaipėda, Lithuania.
This book draws us to God, who creates beauty out of despair; fathers orphans and meets us in special places. Kelvin's passion for disadvantaged people and life in the 'now and not yet' shine through, bringing us face to face with a living Jesus.
Some of these poems have won awards, many of them have been performed at various venues across Europe.

'Verses for the King' will make an excellent gift.
Please join us in this adventure, be generous and pledge.
'Verses for the King' is being published by 'Vineyard International Publishing'. VIP is paying 50% of the publishing. Kelvin has to fund the rest. Among other things, his costs include printing, shipping and import duties. VIP and Kel will each receive 1000 books.

About the Author

Kelvin Fowler was born in a southern New Zealand village and grew up loving running, nature and dirt-track speedway.
His dance with Jesus began in the juxtaposition of 'New Age' culture and Sydney cafés and the cliff-faces, caves and canyons of rural New South Wales, Australia.

A call to the nations' minorities have been paramount to his dance. He has been blessed enough to count among his friends transvestites in Australia, drug addicts in Mexico, a husky in Canada, malnourished kids in the Philippines, alcoholics in Scotland and orphans in Lithuania.

For the last ten years Kelvin and his wife have been interceding through the legacy of the Soviet Union and planting a Vineyard church in Lithuania's port city of Klaipėda.

In-between times Kelvin likes to write, paint, take photos, ride his bicycle and listen to public radio and jazz.

An important notice
All prices are in New Zealand dollars. The exchange rates as of December 12 were approximately:

Thanks

Thank you so much to all of you who have been involved with this important step in my writing journey. It has been fun getting this far.
Thank you to all of you who will pledge; you are helping the adventure continue.

God bless you all.

artist statement

'the normal man is not only far more immoral than he believes but also far more moral than he knows.'
-Sigmund Freud
Choices - we're faced with them every day. There's a constant struggle within us, between the extremes of the id and the superego - to satisfy ourselves, or to satisfy others, it's an internal-external, and spiritual battle that rages within. But, no matter what we do, we must choose.

FROM ASCENDANCY TO LIBERATION

a little take on the Beatles Abbey Road...the individual ego (played by Lukas in white) is tethered by the id or spiritual influence (played by me with the red hair) and the superego or external influence (played by Krysta) and led by the conscious or internal influence (played by Caid).
the battle of making decisions (a tug of war with ropes)...who has power and control over the individual?

within the bubble of the decision making process...the ego is bombarded by thoughts and ideas and options and choices (represented by the paint being squirted from above by the id and superego and the lighting being flashed from all around by the conscious).
another tug of war with ropes...the battle of ascendancy.

glitter thrown at the moment of liberation when a choice, a decision is finally reached by the individual.
coming together in unity for the individual
a beautiful work of art has been created together in collaboration.

"We are Marten Evergreen. We perform the emotions and the stories of the individual - these lead them to the need and the expression of art. The art we share is beyond the dance, beyond the paint, beyond ourselves. It is that moment, that climatic mental state, just before, that art is."

***i'm hoping to post video of the performance soon, so stay tuned***
we didn't take home the gold...but we had so much fun and had a blast performing for Boise at RAWards Semi-Finals 2012. we're appreciative of our fans and all the other artists represented. it's an honor to perform for Boise and we are so grateful for the chance to continue

Marten Evergreen...we are RAW Artists!

Lisa Marten, Lukas Evergreen, Krysta Nebeker
and recently joining us, Caid Jones

we are RAW artists!

we had the honor of performing live at
RAW:ensemble in Boise on September 20, 2012

"Time Spins and Love Wins"
a performance piece on time and love

a wise man named Paul talked about love, and how it effects community through time...and great things came of it. this piece, combining choreographed dance and painting to music, is a representation of how we effect each other (past, present, future) and if we allow Love to be our motivating force we can be a positive influence within community.

the audience was instructed to turn towards the back of the venue to view the large video screen hanging from the ceiling. we began our piece with a short film we created introducing Marten Evergreen and what we're about. then the audience was instructed to turn back around towards the stage to view our live performance. here are some video clips (just snippets) from our avant-garde performance taken by a member of the audience.

WHAT IS RAW?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAW:natural born artists is an independent arts organization, for artists, by artists.

We're a community made up of creative individuals across the nation.

Our mission is to provide independent artists within the first 10 years of their career with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity.

We welcome all genres of art including independent film, fashion, music, visual art, performing art, hairstylists, makeup artists and more.

We encourage the creative success of the many visionaries and storytellers of our generation.

RAW currently operates in 54 cities across the United States & Australia and counting ...

HOW DOES RAW WORK?

Our RAW Directors hand-pick and spotlight local artistic talent in film, fashion, music, visual art, hair & makeup artistry, and performance art. With artists from all genres in each showcase, RAW events come together to form an amazing one-night circus of creativity. These showcases occur once a month in each city location (54 showcases a month). Our RAW season runs from February-October and comes to an extravagant end with our indie arts awards show RAWards in Hollywood (Read more on RAWards below).

What can you expect when attending a RAW Showcase? You'll experience an independent film (usually a short, webisode or music video), a fashion show from an up-and-coming local designer, a musical performance, an art gallery featuring several independent visual artists and photographers, and performance art (comedy/dance/fire dancers, you name it...). You'll get a little taste of everything. Combine all this creativity with drinks, fun, and good company! To partake in the experience, RSVP ($10/ticket) to any of our 54 monthly, city showcases by clicking on the city tab at the top of the homepage!

ONLINE COMMUNITY

www.RAWartists.org is designed to showcase our RAW artists online. RAWartists.org hosts a plethora of online profiles -- exclusive to our hand-picked RAW artists. RAWartists.org is open to the public to view, however, the site profiles and perks are reserved for only selected RAW artists. RAW artists can connect with other RAW artists, post videos and music, promote upcoming projects, and track their success. We also host what we call our RAWk Wall, where art gets down to business. This portion of the site consists of exclusive art-to-business opportunities for our RAW artists to partake in.

RAWards

RAW's Annual Indie Awards Show

At the end of season (October), we host our annual RAWards Show. During a two month-process, we ask the community, a panel of judges and the nation-at-large to vote for their top five favorite artists of the year in film, fashion, music, art, photography, performing art, accessories, hair and makeup. RAW takes that popular vote and narrows down nominees in each city location. We then ask the community to place a live vote (complete with a ballot) at a special City Semi-Final nominee showcase in November. One winner from every city, in every category is chosen by the community (e.g. RAW:Denver, Fashion Designer of the Year). One winner from every city in every category goes on to be judged by the RAW panel of industry professionals in each field. The scores are based on criteria in skill, creativty, wow factor and professionalism. The winners are announced online in December, and honored with their awards at our annual RAWards Show in Hollywood, CA (mid-January). The winners receive big career-boosting prizes like distribution, store placement, studio time, gallery placement and consultations with industry executives and professionals. It's truly an awesome event with performances and highlights from the RAW season.

THE HISTORY

In 2003, a small-town girl graduated high school and moved to the big city of Los Angeles, CA. Her only wish was to pursue her life-long dream of becoming a fashion designer. Not wasting any time, she started her own clothing line. She soon realized that she was just one small fish in a very big pond. She sold her pieces at swapmeets on the weekends while going to school full-time, working part-time and interning in the fashion district.
After a while she thought ... "there's got to be a better way to get my work out there."
Surrounded by new friends and talented people in art, music, performance and film that were facing the same plight -- she decided to take matters into her own hands.
In 2005, Heidi Luerra threw her first multi-faceted showcase in Los Angeles. After much interest from the over 750 attendees that came to the event, she found her calling -- to create a platform for the many people who are talented, yet go unnoticed.
In 2009, equipped with a mission of bringing tools and resources to artists who were fighting the good fight on their own, RAW was born. After the first RAW event, a local web developer, Matthew Klahorst approached Heidi about combining these art events with an online showcase for artists. From this collaboration came the next evolution of RAW -- promoting artists both online and offline.
In 2011, they decided to take the concept beyond Southern California. RAW now hosts monthly showcases that spotlight indie talent in film, fashion, music, art, hair & makeup artistry, performing art and photography in 54 cities across the U.S and counting. By July 2012, RAW will be in 54 U.S. cities and Australia. RAW will launch in China and Europe in 2013.

The Creative Church Conference

The following is part of an informational email from the Director of VineArts in Boise, Idaho about The Creative Church Conference being held at Vineyard Boise July 13-15. This conference is near and dear to my heart and I want you to know about it. I'm on the leadership team for VineArts and am on the planning team for the conference. I will be co-facilitating a couple of breakout workshops and painting live a couple of times during the conference. We're looking to have the conversation with creatives, with pastors & ministers, with lay leaders, and with anyone who is open to embracing the arts within the local church. Please read on and click on the links to find out what I'm referring to...

July 13-15 at Vineyard Boise
Boise, Idaho

Creative: The way you are made, in your Father's image.
Church: Where two or more are gathered in Jesus' name.
Arts: Creative ways to play and express.
Ministry: Doing small (mini) things to bless others.
Conference: A time to learn and share.

If God made you creative, are you intrigued to know why? If you are a leader, do you have a heart to bless artists?

As far as we can tell, an arts ministry conference is a fairly new concept for discussing ways the visual arts, writing, poetry, film, and theater as well as dancing and music can be natural applications of worship, processing, prayer, and outreach by the local church. Many denominations and sizes of churches are registered to attend this inaugural conference in Boise, several from other states and some from outside the United States.

At The Creative Church in Boise July 13-15, Scott McElroy (author of "Finding Divine Inspiration") and Manuel Luz (author of "Imagine That") will discuss why beauty matters to God, and why art needs to matter to the Church. Rory Noland (author of "The Heart of the Artist") will gently examine some of the hazards that come with being artistic and ways to overcome those hazards. Dave Blakeslee (Pastor & Potter) will suggest ways artists and pastors can relate with each other. Our workshops will explore creative applications of ministering through the arts and practical lessons learned from mistakes. Please take these opportunities to share your knowledge with us!

Read about our speakers and the schedule.

We feel this is the beginning of something beautiful.

Think of a creative person who needs this conference, and let them know about it.

Our heart is to bless YOUR local fellowship. Our hope is to offer The Creative Church again in 2014, repeated as a biennial conference for years to come until nobody needs it anymore. May God bring the day when "the arts" and "beauty" cause people to think of the church. That time has begun. Please shape the foundations with us.

Registration is $75.
Register here.
partial scholarships are available.
For the hotel discount and free shuttle between the Boise airport, hotel, and conference, click here.

We want you here. We NEED you here.
May God bless you and the creative works of your hands.

My Creative Travels Fundraiser Art Event in Photos

Thank you to everyone who made this event possible. I believe art is a universal language that transcends all language barriers (whether it be differences linguistically & culturally, whether it be differences potically & socially, whether it be differences spiritually & faith based, whether it be struggles emotionally & relationally with self and others). Creativity is an amazing expression of one's world view and inner voice that needs to be heard...and it can be the element that opens conversation. Thank you to everyone who came and shared in this conversation with me and heard my heart, viewed my art, experienced our live painting/dance performance, and spent time connecting with me and others. Thank you to everyone who contributed and continues to contribute to the support of these creative travels and adventures that I'm on (whether financially and/or through prayer and encouragement). Wherever I go I take you with me. You are all just as much a part of "painting on people's lives" as I am...together we are loving on people throughout this world in creative ways. Thank you. May we love much and love well.
